Google Assistant adds wellness data from third-party services

Tracking wellness has taken on all new meaning in the year 2020. Not only do we need to be mindful of COVID-19, but mental and physical health are more important than ever with lockdown restrictions in place. To help people stay informed, Google Assistant is now providing users with wellness data from third-party services.

According to Android Police, Fitbit is currently the only service Assistant can connect to right now, but we should start to see more robust integration in the future. When connected to Fitbit, Assistant’s new Wellness section will display information such as sleep data, exercise, and nutrition. Going forward, you’ll be able to ask, “How much sleep did I get last night,” and Assistant will show your data.

Android Police notes that Assistant is only able to retrieve sleep information at the moment, but the other data points should be available soon. The new functionality appears to be arriving in a staggered rollout, so not everyone will see it at the same time.

Seeing Fitbit be the first third-party service supported by Assistant isn’t a surprise. Google previously agreed to acquire the fitness company, although the deal is still awaiting regulatory approval. Fitbit also recently brought Google Assistant support to its activity-tracking devices. Meanwhile, Google previously said it hopes to build “compelling devices” once the deal with Fitbit goes through.

When those devices are made, users will no doubt see much deeper Fitbit integration with Assistant. If that’s not enough, Google Fit recently got a major home screen overhaul that includes sleep data from third-party apps and devices.
