September 2020 security update rolling out for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Just a day ago, OnePlus surprised everyone by rolling out the September 2020 Android security patches through a new set of “Developer Preview” builds of Android 11 for the OnePlus 8 series. There was no sorcery involved, though, as Android Partners (i.e. major OEMs) are always notified of all Android framework issues and Linux kernel issues by Google at least 30 days before the actual ASB is made public. Samsung, for example, maintains a fantastic track record when it comes to delivering such monthly security updates via the stable channel even before Google. In fact, the Korean OEM has done it again – the Galaxy Note 9 is now receiving the September 2020 security patches.

Tagged with the version number N960FXXS6ETHB, the new firmware for the Galaxy Note 9 is intended for the Exynos-powered international variant of the smartphone (model number SM-N960F). We have yet to locate the exact changelog for this update, but the build number itself is sufficient to conclude that the firmware is still based on One UI 2.1. There is no new feature apart from the bump in the Android security patch level. The bootloader version (v6) also remains the same.

The FOTA is available in the DBT region, which is Samsung’s internal code for Germany. It is technically possible to download the updated firmware package directly from the Samsung update server using Frija and flash it on a different regional model, but only do so if you’re comfortable with manual flashing. In case you have a Canadian or U.S. edition of the Galaxy Note 9, you have to wait a bit. The aforementioned build is not compatible with those Snapdragon-powered variants, and thus cross-flashing is strictly a no-go.

At the time of writing this article, Samsung’s Mobile Security portal has not been updated with the details of the September 2020 security bulletin.
